Fall has arrived bringing cooler temperatures, pumpkin pickings and hay rides. In honor of the fall season, it is also falls prevention awareness. Falls are serious and costly, especially for older Americans. At HandyPro, home safety is a number one priority.
To try and prevent falls in and around your home, there are steps you can take to make your home safer. Here are five tips to help:
1. Remove or repair tripping hazards
Examine every room for possible hazards. Ensure floors are even and remove rugs that are slippery. If there are loose boards or uneven sidewalk, have them repaired by a licensed professional.
2. Clean up clutter
The most effective way to prevent falls is to keep your home neat and tidy at all times. Remove all clutter such as newspapers, boxes, plants and furniture out of high traffic areas. Clear paths are an easy way to avoid unexpected falls.
3. Install grab bars and handrails
Place grab bars in the bathroom around the toilet and shower areas. Install handrails along all stairs as well as hallways if needed.
4. Ensure adequate lighting
Place nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms, stairways, and hallways. Install lights on the exterior of your home near the porch and garage area so you have a lit path from your car to your home.
5. Keep heavy objects at eye level or below
Avoid placing heavy objects or items you use regularly up high. Try to keep items in easy to reach places. Use a Lazy Susan—a round, revolving tray—and slide-out shelving to make things even easier to reach.
If you or a loved one are in need of assistance to make your home safe, contact HandyPro of Northwest Indiana today at 2197078240 to have a licensed professional come out for a free in home estimate.
